At the December meeting of the Peace and Education Coalition, Marisela Corona, a long time counselor at our local Cesar Chavez elementary school, was invited to share her impression of the holiday culture in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. We are grateful for the reflections of Marisela!
It’s an honor to reflect on the incredible unity and warmth that defines our Latin community here in Back of the Yards.
Our neighborhood is not just a place on a map; it’s a tapestry woven together by the diverse threads of cultures, traditions, and, most importantly, by the bonds of togetherness.
Aside from the delicious scents of home cooked meals that my students families share with me from time to time and that invoke memories from when I lived in my home town of Michoacan.
The holiday season is a time when our streets come alive with vibrant decorations such as when our schools come together to decorate those amazing Christmas trees that are displayed on 47th and Damen.
The laughter and smiles of children when they receive presents from Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council OR from The Santa Anthony’s Good list Sponsored by The Port Ministry.
The festive songs from Las Posadas that are held by St. Oscar Romero Parish which brings prayers that unite us together
But beyond the glittering lights and festive music, it’s the spirit of unity that truly defines us.
In our community, the holiday season is about more than individual celebrations; it’s a time when we open our hearts and extend our hands to our neighbors–no matter if they are newcomers or have been here for 50 years. Regardless of background or beliefs, we come together to share in the joy, to support each other, and to create a sense of belonging for everyone.
We embrace our diversity and celebrate our shared humanity. We see the strength in our unity, the power in our collective spirit, and the beauty in our differences.
It’s in the small acts of kindness, the shared smiles, and the gestures of solidarity where our Back of the Yards community truly shines. Whether it’s through organizing food drives for those in need, decorating our streets with colorful lights, or simply coming together to exchange stories and laughter, we exemplify the true meaning of community.
If there is one thing that I know is that Back of the Yards shines! And this neighborhood will continue to foster a community where compassion knows no boundaries, where generosity is abundant, and where the joy of the holidays is shared by all.
Thank you to each and every one of you for being the heart and soul of our wonderful Back of the Yards community. Together, we make this season—and every day—brighter, warmer, and more beautiful for everyone. Happy holidays to you all!
